About this service
Description
A marriage ceremony can be a civil marriage ceremony or a church wedding. Civil marriage ceremonies are available with us and the District Court. Church weddings are available at the Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Orthodox Church, as well as at certain registered religious communities.
We marry couples of the same or different gender at our service location, i.e. the Local Register Office, in accordance with the marriage script of the marriage decree. The officiator will be a district registrar or a notary public. During service hours, the marriage ceremony is free of charge at the local register offices. You may also request to have your marriage ceremony at another location, such as your booked party venue. In such a case, the ceremony is subject to a fee.
The marriage ceremony cannot take place until the impediments to marriage have been examined. You should request the examination of impediments well in advance, but no earlier than four months before your marriage date.
At least two witnesses of 15 years of age or older must be present for the marriage ceremony. You can bring your own witnesses, such as friends of family. The Agency can also provide the two required witnesses. The couple must prove their identities to the officiator during the ceremony.
Marriages that are officiated by religious communities or district courts are registered in the Population Information System by the Digital and Population Data Services Agency. We register marriages based on the officiator’s notification.
How to use it
* First, order an examination of impediments to marriage in our online service. The certificate is valid for 4 months from the date of issue.
* Reserve a time for the wedding ceremony in our electronic booking system. You can also book a reservation on the phone, by email, or by visiting one of our service locations.
Conditions
* Before the marriage ceremony, the couple must request an examination of impediments to marriage. This ensures that no impediments under Finnish law exist for the marriage.
* The impediment examination certificate must be submitted to the officiator before the marriage ceremony can take place.
* The engaged parties have to prove their identity to the officiator before the marriage ceremony.
Fee details
Officiating a marriage ceremony at a Local Register Office during office hours is free of charge. A marriage ceremony to be performed outside office hours must be agreed upon separately with the officiator.
A marriage ceremony performed outside the Local Register Office during office hours or outside office hours is subject to a fee. In addition, you will be charged for the officiator’s travel expenses. For more information on fees, see the Local Register Offices’ price list.
