To obtain exclusive trademark rights, apply for its registration.
Published by: Finnish Patent and Registration Office · Government organisation
Description language: English
Coverage: All Finland
About this service
Description
A trademark is an exclusive right and a means to stand out on the market. A trademark distinguishes between the goods or services offered by the company and those offered by other companies. There are many different types of trademarks. For example, a word or a combination of words, a pattern, a slogan, a beep, or a combination of all of these. Registering your trademark gives you the right to prohibit others from using the same mark for similar products or services.
A trademark is valid for 10 years from the date of application and can be renewed every 10 years. In Finland, the Finnish Patent and Registration Office (PRH) registers national trademarks valid in Finland. EU-wide trademarks are registered by EUIPO.
How to use it
1. Before submitting an application, it is worth examining whether your trademark could be registered. Check out the terms and conditions of registration at prh.fi/en and take advantage of free databases. You can also order a preliminary study from the PRH to determine whether a trademark can be registered.
2. Fill in the application in PRH's electronic service. Indicate the trademark to be applied for in the application, for which goods or services you intend to use it and who is the applicant.
3. PRH examines whether there are any obstacles to the registration of the mark. Reply to any interim decisions sent by PRH within the given time limit.
4. PRH registers and announces a trademark if there are no obstacles to its registration. A registration certificate will be sent to you.
5. Renew trademark. A trademark may be perpetual, but it must be renewed every 10 years.
Conditions
A trademark is intended for use in business, but can also be applied for by a private person.
A trademark must be distinctive. A trade mark may not merely describe the goods or services with which it is intended to be used. For example, the word diesel would not be a valid trademark for fuels, but as a trademark of clothing it would be very distinctive. In addition, a trademark may not cause confusion with previous trademarks or company names. Registration may also be blocked for some other reasons. For more information, see prh.fi/en.
Trademark registration, research services and renewal of a trademark are chargeable services.
Fee details
The fees are based on the Decree of the Finnish Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment on the Chargeable Services of the Finnish Patent and Registration Office.

A utility model is an exclusive right to professionally use an invention, similar to the patent.
Published by: Finnish Patent and Registration Office · Government organisation
Description language: English
Coverage: All Finland
About this service
Description
In Finland, utility models are granted by the Finnish Patent and Registration Office (PRH). A utility model gives you an exclusive right to professionally utilise your invention. In that sense, utility models resemble patents, but their term is shorter (no more than 10 years).
Your invention must be new, industrially applicable, and inventive in order to be granted a utility model. However, in the case of a utility model, the subject to be protected does not need to be as inventive as for a patent.
Utility models are usually granted a lot faster than patents. During the handling process, a registration examination is performed on the application. The process does not assess the novelty or inventiveness of the invention – you are responsible for ensuring that these prerequisites are met.
How to use it
1. Before applying for a utility model, you should examine the novelty of your invention. You can use our patent databases or order a novelty search from PRH.
2. Prepare a utility model application in either Finnish or Swedish. You will need the application form, description of the invention, claims, and possible pictures. For more specific instructions on how to apply, please visit our website.
3. Wait for your application to be processed and respond to any interim decisions. The application will be formally examined first, to verify that it contains the required documents and that the application fee has been paid. Afterwards, we will check if the invention can be registered.
4. After your application has been approved, we will add the utility model on the register and send a registration certificate to you.
5. Keep your utility model valid with renewal fees. The utility model is valid for four years after the registration, after which you can renew it twice: first for four years, then for two. The maximum validity of a utility model is therefore 10 years.
Conditions
Utility models are suitable for protecting product and device inventions. It does not cover inventions of methods. Private individuals, groups of people, companies, or communities may apply for a utility model.
The invention, which is the subject of the utility model, should be industrially applicable, new, and clearly distinctive from previous known solutions. PRH examines the novelty and distinctiveness only if the applicant requests it specifically and pays for it. Usually, an application leads to a registration if it is formally correct, in other words, if the application has all the required documents, the invention is alike an invention described in the Act on Utility Models, and the application fee has been paid.
Fee details
The utility model fees are based on the Decree of the Finnish Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment on the Chargeable Services of the Finnish Patent and Registration Office. The fees are official charges that have no value-added tax.

An AEO’s customs and logistics operations have a security certificate granted by Customs and they are therefore entitled to benefits across the EU.
Published by: Finnish Customs · Government organisation
Description language: English
Coverage: All Finland
About this service
Description
The abbreviation AEO comes from the expression Authorised Economic Operator. An AEO is a business whose customs clearance and logistics operations have been granted a security certificate by Customs and is therefore entitled to benefits across the EU. Customs is legally obligated to streamline the foreign trade of AEO companies. Therefore, Customs has decreased the number of physical and document-based inspections for AEO companies, for example. The objective of the AEO programme is to guide companies to continuously improve the procedures and safety of their customs operations.
There are two kinds of AEO authorisations: AEOC (Customs simplifications) and AEOS (security and safety). A company can have both authorisations valid at the same time, in which case the applicable abbreviation is AEOF.
An AEO authorisation can be applied by a company subject to customs legislation; the company may e.g. handle goods, goods data or documents under customs supervision.
The following conditions apply for granting an AEO authorisation:
- The company is established within the Union.
- The company has not repeatedly violated customs legislation or tax regulations in the last three years.
- The company is financially stable.
- The company has an adequate accounting and logistics system that enables customs inspections.
The company might also be required to have practical competence or professional qualifications, as well as to meet the security norms regarding security management, security of facilities and personal security, logistics and production security as well as the security of the supply chain.
All companies with AEO authorisation must perform in-house controls, i.e. monitor their own operations regularly. The aim of the controls is to ensure that each AEO company controls the risks of the supply chain, identifies error situations and deviations and corrects the activity when needed. Predicting risks and their effects is usually most efficient when the in-house controls are integrated as a part of the company’s risk management and control systems.
The authorisations are granted in either Finnish or Swedish.
How to use it
You can find instructions for applying for an AEO authorisation in the AEO authorisations section of the Customs website.

You can apply for and be granted payment time for fines and other sanctions enforced by the Legal Register Centre.
Published by: Legal register centre · Government organisation
Description language: English
Coverage: All Finland
About this service
Description
The Legal Register Centre (LRC) can grant payment time for the payment of a fine or other penalty if you have a justified reason, but not in every case. You can apply for payment time if you have a justified reason for not being able to pay the penalty on time. The reason can be illness, unemployment, military service, or another comparable justified reason.
Payment time can be granted for the total amount or a part thereof, and for a maximum of one year. A longer period of payment time can be granted for very weighty reasons. At most 6 months of payment time can be granted for a conversion sentence.
If the matter has been transferred to Enforcement Authority, the enforcement authority will decide on granting payment time.
How to use it
When you are about to apply for payment time, check whether you have received a reminder for payment from the LRC or whether the enforcement matter is displayed in the electronic service. If you have not received a reminder for payment or the matter is not displayed in the electronic service, you cannot apply for payment time.
Depending on the matter, the information can take anything from a few days to a few months to be conveyed to our debt-collection system and electronic service.
Apply for payment time conveniently through the LRC's electronic service. Using the electronic service requires strong authentication.
If you are unable to use the electronic service, use the LRC's application form to apply for payment time:
* Application for payment time
* Application for payment time for a conversion sentence
Complete the application carefully and send it to us by one of the following methods:
* Through the Suomi.fi/messages service (Legal Register Centre > Enforcement of fines and penalties)
* By email to maksuaikahakemukset.ork@om.fi. We recommend the Ministry of Justice's secure messaging service .
* By post to Legal Register Centre /Payment time applications, PO BOX 157, 13101 Hämeenlinna, Finland.
You can also send a free-form written application to the LRC. Such applications must contain all of the information requested on LRC's above-mentioned application form.
If necessary, the LRC will ask the debtor or Enforcement Authority for further information.
We process each application for payment time in order of receipt. You cannot be granted payment time as a matter of course. Each application is considered individually.
Conditions
If you have a justified reason for not being able to pay the penalty on time, you can apply for payment time.
You can also apply for payment time for joint and several compensations, either alone or together with the other people liable for the damages. Please note that payment time can only be granted for the total amount and not to the share of an individual person. If you are applying for payment time for joint and several compensations on your own, you will be liable for the total amount of the compensations.
Payment time is not granted automatically. Things like how diligently the debtor has managed their previous debt-collection matters are taken into account in the decision.
An application may also be rejected if it is incomplete.
Payment time of at most one year can be granted without instalments. You can be granted more than a year’s payment time if you make monthly payments according to the payment schedule included in the payment time decision.
If you fail to follow the payment schedule, the agreement will lapse and the matter will be moved to Enforcement Authority.
In a case involving a conversion sentence, a single payment with a term of payment of 1–3 months can be proposed as the payment schedule. Longer payment schedules of 4–6 months require the payment of monthly instalments.
Do not pay instalments on a conversion sentence if you have not been given a payment schedule decision. Paid instalments will be returned to you if you do not follow the payment schedule.
If you fail to follow the payment schedule, the agreement will lapse and the matter will be moved to enforcement.
