Description
Helsinki's Youth Council is a statutory youth participation channel, as specified in the Local Government Act, for 13–17-year-olds. Its task is to have an influence in matters that pertain to young people in Helsinki. The Youth Council consists of thirty members and five deputy members. Helsinki’s Youth Council is appointed in an election every other year. All Helsinki residents aged 13–17 and those who turn 13 in the voting year may vote and stand as Youth Council candidates. The duty of Helsinki's Youth Council is to ensure that young people are heard in Helsinki’s decision-making and in the planning, implementation and monitoring of the operations of the City’s divisions. Helsinki Youth Council issues comments and statements on matters concerning young people to bring up the voice of young people in the City’s decision-making. The Youth Council is represented at meetings of the City Council and committees, for example. As a rule, the Youth Council convenes once a month. The Youth Council has its own premises in Töölö Sports Hall. Meetings are also held elsewhere.
