Ympäristöterveydenhuollon tehtävänä on ihmisen elinympäristöstä johtuvien terveydellisten vaarojen ja haittojen ehkäiseminen ja vähentäminen sekä väestön terveyden ja viihtyvyyden edistäminen valvomalla ja parantamalla elinympäristön terveydellistä laatua.
Ympäristöterveydenhuolto vastaa terveydensuojelu-, elintarvike-, hygienia-, tupakka- ja eläinsuojelulain edellyttämistä valvonta-, neuvonta sekä tarkastustehtävistä. Ympäristöterveydenhuollon vastuualueelle kuuluvat terveysvalvonta ja eläinlääkintähuolto.
