Just outside Helsinki and the Helsinki Metropolitan Area is a unique archipelago that is open to all. Some of these islands can be accessed by bridge, while others can be reached by a ferry service. Some are small recreational islands, accessible by boat or kayak. Only some of these islands stock firewood. The Pihlajasaari and Kaunissaari islands are particularly good for camping. Helsinki has around 300 islands and 130 km of coastline, so there’s plenty to see and do all summer long. Maritime Helsinki offers diverse activities, including history, art, sandy beaches, restaurants, and various recreational opportunities. Many islands are accessible by water transport in the summer. Water buses require a fare, and you can only get to the Suomenlinna Sea Fortress with an HRT ticket.

Outdoor gyms or outdoor exercise areas allow you to work out according to your fitness and skill level. Outdoor gyms offer weight stack machines, while outdoor exercise areas allow you to work out with a variety of equipment and machines using your body weight. There are already dozens of outdoor gyms across Helsinki, and new ones are constantly being built. Outdoor gyms are available to city residents free of charge and open 24/7. Outdoor gyms offer a wide range of fitness equipment suitable for everyone, from beginners to goal-oriented fitness enthusiasts. There is a bench seating area in the immediate vicinity of each outdoor gym. Outdoor gyms have lighting, so you can also work out in the evenings. There is no winter maintenance for outdoor gyms. Outdoor gyms are meant to provide a peaceful workout for everyone, so please listen to music with headphones and avoid reserving more than one piece of equipment for personal use. Outreach youth work offers support to young people aged 15–28 in Helsinki who are not currently studying or working – or who otherwise need a change and direction in their lives. In Helsinki, outreach youth work operates with several other organisations, such as Helsinki’s outreach youth workers, Reconciliation, Vamos, Valo-valmennus and Sveps. The activities are based on the young person's own wishes and needs – support is provided specifically for the issues they want help with. The support is voluntary, free of charge and confidential.
