A new vehicle or a vehicle imported into Finland must be registered before it is taken into use in traffic. Usually, a new vehicle is insured and registered at the car dealership. If you buy a vehicle from a dealer who does not register it, you can carry out the first registration yourself. In this case, the vehicle must have a registration number and registration plates. You will also need a digital certificate from the seller. If you import a vehicle into Finland yourself, you must submit the required notifications to the Finnish Tax Administration and Finnish Customs and have the vehicle undergo a registration inspection before completing the first registration.

### A new vehicle: Carry out the first registration of a new vehicle with a digital certificate in Traficom’s My e-Services. The vehicle must have a registration number and registration plates. If you cannot carry out the first registration electronically, you can visit an inspection station that offers registration services. As the new owner, you will need either a digital certificate from the seller or a prior notification certificate to complete the first registration. The car dealership or finance company can perform the registration on your behalf when you purchase a new vehicle. If necessary, you can also use your insurance company’s e-service or customer service.
