The Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) monitors activities that expose to natural radiation. Activities that expose to natural radiation may expose employees or the population to a higher amount of natural radiation than normally. Activities that expose to natural radiation include: • Working in facilities where the radon concentration of the breathing air is significant, for example in mines and underground spaces (sections 145 and 155 of the Radiation Act) • Delivering domestic water to consumers with higher levels of natural radioactive substances than usually (section 154 of the Radiation Act) • Manufacture of construction products, import from outside the EU or transfer within the EU if they contain more than a normal amount of natural radioactive substances (section 153 of the Radiation Act and section 53 of the Government Decree 1034/2018) • Mining (section 145 of the Radiation Act) • Handling, use, storage or taking advantage of materials and waste containing more than a normal amount of natural radionuclides (NORM) (section 145 of the Radiation Act and section 52 of the Government Decree 1034/2018) • Flight operations (section 152 of the Radiation Act)

Workplaces where the radon measurement is completed by a radon measurement company that was not ordered through STUK’s radon measurement service must notify STUK of the measurement results by submitting them on the online service. Further information on the other obligations concerning activities that expose to natural radiation, such as the notification obligation, the obligation to verify natural radiation exposure, and the determination of radiation exposure caused by construction products, are described on the STUK website.

The party, employer or a company that has activities that expose to natural radiation is responsible for the obligations concerning activities that expose to natural radiation.
