In flexible basic education, your child can study at school, at the workplace and in various operating environments. On-the-job learning is an integral part of the studies. The studies also include study visits and excursions. Each pupil’s personal learning methods and goals are recorded in the education plan. Flexible basic education is intended for grades 7–9. There are flexible basic education groups in the schools of Joutseno, Kesämäki and Lauritsala. These groups can also be implemented in the schools of Kimpinen and Sammonlahti. The groups have about 10 pupils and there is usually a teacher and special-needs assistant working in them. The groups cooperate with a wide range of operators, such as the youth services. Flexible basic education supports pupils in completing the basic education syllabus, transitioning to upper secondary education and, in the long term, in finding employment. The aim of flexible basic education is to reduce dropping out of basic education, prevent exclusion as well as strengthen motivation to study and life management.

Generally, the application to move to a flexible basic education class must be made in good time during the spring term. The application can be made by the pupil and guardian. General upper secondary education takes place at Finnish upper secondary school. The aim of this programme is for the students to become healthy, balanced and civilised. In general upper secondary school, students are given the tools they need in order to assimilate, combine and use knowledge and skills. They are also taught to apply the things they have learned in a variety of ways.  General upper secondary school students can develop their skills for further studies, working life, entrepreneurship and internationality. In general upper secondary school studies, the individual needs of the student are taken into account in order to support learning, well-being and the building of a sustainable future. General upper secondary school studies consist of study units, the results of which are given in credits. General upper secondary school studies must include a minimum of 150 credits. Upon graduation from general upper secondary school, the student receives a general upper secondary education certificate and a matriculation examination certificate. Lappeenranta has one general upper secondary school maintained by the city: Lappeenranta Upper Secondary School which operates in two different branches: Lyseo and Kimpinen. General upper secondary school cooperates with basic education as well as other upper secondary and higher education institutions.

The requirement for admission to a general upper secondary school is the completed basic education syllabus. Applications for general upper secondary education are made in spring in the joint application procedure of vocational education and training and general upper secondary education at Studyinfo (www.opintopolku.fi). The applicant will be selected for their preferred study programme if their average grade in theoretical subjects is sufficient. The lowest acceptable average grade for Lappeenranta Upper Secondary School is 7.0. The number of starting places in general upper secondary education is decided annually. Applicants for general upper secondary school also state their wishes regarding the subject choices at the upper secondary school. You can get more information on the joint application procedure from your guidance counsellor or Studyinfo. You will be notified of your general upper secondary school place when the results of the joint application procedure are available in mid-June.

Your child will receive guidance counselling throughout basic education. In grades 1 and 3, the class teacher is primarily responsible for the accumulation of learning skills and for guidance counselling as well as cooperates closely with the home. In grades 3 to 6, the class teacher focuses their teaching, if necessary, on subject choices and study weightings as per the allocation of lesson hours in cooperation with the subject teachers and the guidance counsellor. In grades 7 to 9, guidance counselling is a separate subject taught by the guidance counsellor. Guidance counselling includes an introduction to working life in grades 7 to 9. Schools have slightly different practices regarding the Introduction to working life periods. Usually, seventh graders get introduced to working life for one day (e.g. in the school canteen), eighth graders for 3 to 5 days and ninth graders for 10 days. During the Introduction to working life periods, your child will gain personal experiences from working life and professions in genuine working environments. Guidance counselling supports personal growth and development in such a way that pupils’ study skills and social skills would develop and life management skills would increase. Guidance counselling provides you and your child with information on study skills, optional subjects and their significance for learning and the future, various professions as well as possibilities of further studies. Guidance and the flow of information are particularly important in transition phases of studies, such as the transition from primary to secondary school and from basic education to upper secondary level. ### Enhanced guidance counselling Along with the extension of compulsory education, your child must apply for upper secondary education after basic education. Sometimes pupils need additional support and guidance in transitioning to further studies. In this case, your child has the right to receive enhanced individual guidance counselling in addition to guidance counselling in grades 8 and 9. The focus of enhanced individual guidance counselling is to develop the pupil’s further study skills as well as refer them to suitable further studies.

The City of Lappeenranta’s hobby grant for children and young people has changed so that the responsibility for awarding the grant has been transferred to clubs based in Lappeenranta.

The City of Lappeenranta grants assistance to clubs, associations and foundations based in Lappeenranta with which it has agreements, but also to units organising basic education in arts to be distributed to children and young people under the age of 18 in Lappeenranta who find it difficult to start or continue a hobby due to the family’s tight finances.

Villkor

The organiser of the hobby must be a Lappeenranta-based registered club, association, organisation, foundation organising hobby activities or a unit that arranges basic education in arts that has a partnership agreement with the City of Lappeenranta. Information on the grants and assistance available should be actively shared with both existing hobbyists and potential new hobbyists. The organiser of the hobby also undertakes to use the city logo in the application process for grants. The organiser of the hobby is responsible for the application process and related data protection issues in accordance with the current legislation. The organiser of the hobby has the right to check the income information provided in the applicant’s application when necessary. The clubs distribute the grant to a hobbyist whose municipality of residence is Lappeenranta and who is less than 18 years old. The hobbyist has a hobby or is about to begin a hobby in a registered club, organisation, association, foundation, or a unit that arranges basic education in arts that has an agreement with the city and is based in Lappeenranta. Assistance may be granted only for the costs related to the basic activities of one hobby/child/year. Basic hobby activities include weekly/regular attendance of children or young people in guided leisure activities. A hobby grant can be awarded for the payment of term, monthly or season fees based on actual expenses. The grant may not exceed €50/month/child or €600/year/child. The organiser of the hobby determines to whom the grant is awarded. The low-income calculator has been disabled. The low-income assessment can be based on an assessment of the need for assistance, for example due to unemployment, inability to work, single parenthood or other economic challenges. In 2020, the low-income threshold was €1,280/month in a single person’s household. Invoicing has been agreed in the partnership agreement.

In Lappeenranta, instruction in English is organised at Kesämäki school. You can apply for a school place for your child in an English-language class at the same time as you enrol your child in the first grade at school in Wilma. You can also apply for a school place at another stage if your family moves to Lappeenranta later. Instruction in English at Kesämäki school is organised as so-called extensive bilingual education, in which both Finnish and English are used in instruction. The aim of the English-language classes is to teach pupils the syllabus of grades 1–6 in basic education in accordance with the curriculum while giving them the opportunity to study English from the first grade onwards. The aim is for the pupils to achieve a level in English where instruction can be provided mainly in English in the fifth or sixth grade.

Pupils are selected for the English-language class according to the following criteria in the following order: 1. The pupil’s place of residence or future place of residence is Lappeenranta. If there is room in the group to be formed, pupils from nearby municipalities can also be admitted to the English-language class as long as they meet the other selection criteria. 2. A Finnish language proficiency test is held for all applicants in the language and an English test for those with Finnish language skills is not sufficient. Those admitted to the teaching group must take a language test approved. 3. A draw at class level among those new pupils who receive the same score in the tests and at least the minimum score required for admission to the class. If the student aspires to Kesämäki school's English classes in the middle of elementary school, he must take an age-appropriate test approved. The pupils of the English-language class will continue on to the seventh grade in the English-language class at Kesämäen koulu.

Avgiftsinformation

The English-language classes are part of the Education Department of the City of Lappeenranta, i.e. studying is free of charge. The English-language class is a secondary school place. The city does not arrange transport to a secondary school. The prerequisite for admission to the English-language class is that the guardian takes care of transporting the pupil and the related costs.

In music classes in Lappeenranta, we offer weighted education in music, which means that the amount of music instruction is higher than usual. The amount of music instruction has been decided in the allocation of lesson hours of Kimpisen koulu. The instruction consists of various forms of singing, playing instruments and music theory. The application period for the music class is in the January of the second school year. Pupils take the entrance examination at the Music Institute in February. The exam includes various singing and rhythmic tasks and a group music section, which are used to assess the prerequisites for acquiring skills in different areas of music. In Wilma, guardians are informed of the application for the music class and the pupil admission. An information event will be held at the Lappeenranta Music Institute for guardians of pupils applying for the music class. The event will present the activities of the music classes and the Music Institute and provide more detailed information on the application for the music class and the entrance examination. Villkor

The music class is a secondary school place. The city does not arrange transport to a secondary school. The selection criteria for the music class are the following: 1. The pupil’s place of residence is Lappeenranta. If there is room in the group to be formed, pupils from other municipalities can also be admitted to the music class as long as they meet the other selection criteria. 2. Results of the entrance exam organised by Lappeenranta Music Institute and Kimpinen school, which assesses the musicality of the pupil. The entrance exam includes a musicality test at the Lappeenranta Music Institute, a singing test, an interview, and a group music performance organized by Kimpinen School. 3. If two or more pupils receive exactly the same score in the musicality test, the pupil with a higher score in the section assessing singing skills is primarily selected for the music class. 4. If the pupils also receive exactly the same score in the section assessing singing skills, the pupil with a higher score in the ensemble playing section is primarily selected for the music class. 5. A draw is held among pupils who receive the same score in the Music Institute’s entrance exam, the section assessing singing skills and the ensemble playing section if the score is at least the minimum score required for admission.

Yhdistyksen toimintasuunnitelma ja talousarvio ovat pakollisia liitteitä, jotka tulee jättää avustushakemuksen yhteydessä. Avustuksen myöntövuoden loppuun mennessä on toimitettava myös edellisen vuoden toimintakertomus, tilinpäätös ja toiminnan-/tilintarkastuskertomus. The records management takes care of the documents arising from the city’s operations and decision-making, as well as the documents received by the city. Matters handled by the city and the related documents are registered at the Registry Office. You can ask the Registry Office about pending administrative matters. The City of Lappeenranta has a centralised Registry Office at City Hall, which deals with matters of all divisions except the Environmental Office. The registry office of Lappeenranta Region’s Environmental Office is located on the premises of the Environmental Office. Information on public documents related to the city’s operations is available in the city archives. The most requested documents include estate inventory deeds, school certificates and documents related to construction. Permanently stored documents of the municipalities merged with Lappeenranta (Lappee, Lauritsala, Nuijamaa, Joutseno and Ylämaa) are also stored in the city archives. The city archives also house the Lappeenranta regional archives, where the archives of civic organisations, small businesses and individual persons in the region are gathered. These archives are available to researchers. In the city archives, you can examine documents on site during opening hours, or by agreement at other times. You do not need an appointment. It is possible to arrange a place for researchers. Longer periods should be agreed on beforehand. In principle, the operations of the authorities and the related documents are public. Documents are public unless otherwise expressly provided by law. If a document is secret, the authority is obliged to justify the decision to keep it secret. In addition, everyone has the right to be informed of documents concerning themselves, even if they are required by law to be kept secret from the public.
