Diverse language skills and knowledge of foreign cultures acquired during general upper secondary school are useful in leisure, further studies and working life. Everyone benefits from versatile language skills, regardless of their educational background or occupation. In further studies in many fields, part of the exam literature and teaching is in foreign languages. When seeking employment, strong language skills are a clear differentiation factor from other applicants. There are seven foreign languages available for general upper secondary school students: * A languages: English, Spanish, French, German and Russian * B1 language: Swedish * B2 languages: Spanish, French, German and Russian * B3 languages: Spanish, Italian, French, German and Russian The groups to be established are decided annually according to the subject choices.

### Etelä-Karjalan museon vaihtuvat näyttelyt Etelä-Karjalan museon näyttelyiden teemat ja aiheet ovat hyvin monipuolisia. Ne voivat olla yhtä lailla alueellisia ja paikallisia sekä valtakunnallisia ja kansainvälisiä. Kansainvälisillä ja valtakunnallisilla teemoillakin on usein yhteys alueeseen tai paikallisuuteen. Näyttely voivat liittyä myös johonkin ajankohtaiseen esim. kansalliseen, alueelliseen tai paikalliseen juhla- tai merkkivuoteen. Näyttelyt voivat olla sekä esine-painotteisia että valokuvanäyttelyitä. Pyrkimyksenä on, ettei samantyylisiä näyttelykokonaisuuksia, aiheita tai teemoja esitellä montaa peräkkäin. Museossa järjestetään vuosittain 2-3 vaihtuvaa näyttelyä. ### Lappeenrannan taidemuseo Museon näyttelyt käsittelevät taiteen eri ilmiöitä hyvin monipuolisesti. Pääpaino on nykytaiteella, mutta vanhempaa taidetta esitellään myös säännöllisesti. Näyttelyissä yksi tärkeä painopiste on kaakkoissuomalainen taide. Välillä mukaan mahtuu myös ulkomaista taidetta esitteleviä näyttelyitä. Koska pysyvää kokoelmanäyttelyä ei ole esillä, kootaan omista kokoelmista vaihtuvia kokoelmanäyttelyitä yhdessä kokoelma-amanuenssin kanssa. Omia kokoelmia käytetään mukana vaihtuvissa näyttelyissä mahdollisuuksien mukaan. Taidemuseossa on 4-6 vaihtuvaa näyttelyä vuosittain.

Museoiden yhteislipun hinta on aikuisille 11 euroa. Eläkeläisille, työttömille ja opiskelijoille lipun hinta on 8 euroa. Alle 18-vuotiaat pääsevät Lappeenrannan kaupungin museoihin maksutta.

Lappeenrannan kaupungin valtion tukema vuokra-asuntokanta on noin 4800 asuntoa. Asunnot on pääosin rakennettu valtion korkotuella. Suuri osa asunnoista on kaupungin yhtiön Lappeenrannan Asuntopalvelu Oy:n omistuksessa. Asukasvalinnat tapahtuvat Valtion tukeman asuntorakentamisen keskuksen VARKE:n asukasvalintaperusteita noudattaen. Valtion tukemat vuokra-asunnot, joita aiemmin kutsuttiin ARA-vuokra-asunnoiksi, ovat tarkoitettu niitä eniten tarvitseville eli pienituloisille ja vähävaraisille hakijoille. Valtion tukemissa asunnoissa asukasvalinnat perustuvat sosiaalisen tarkoituksenmukaisuuden ja taloudellisen tarpeen mukaisesti. Näitä arvioidaan hakijan asunnontarpeen, tulojen ja varallisuuden perusteella. Tulo- ja varallisuusrajan ylittäjilläkin on mahdollisuus saada asunto sellaisissa tapauksissa, kun muita kiireellisiä asunnonhakijoita ei ole. Asukasvalintaperusteisiin voi tarkemmin tutustua Valtion tukeman asuntorakentamisen keskuksen VARKE:n sivustolla. Lappeenrannassa on myös muiden vuokranantajien rakennuttamia vuokra-asuntoja, joista osa on rakennettu valtion tuella, ja joiden vuokrauksessa noudatetaan Valtion tukeman asuntorakentamisen keskuksen VARKE:n asukasvalintaperusteita.

In the Lappeenranta libraries, there are various spaces designed for customer use. The main library offers meeting rooms for both small and large gatherings as well as events. In Lauritsala Library, there is a club room, a band room, and a researcher’s room. In Joutseno Library, the versatile Olkkari space can be used for gatherings and even for playing games.

Villkor

Lappeenranta City Library offers facilities for meetings, events, and non-formal education. The library charges a fee for the facilities if a private person or group organizes an event without the library’s involvement. If the organizer charges participants an entrance fee, the library collects an increased fee. The library does not charge rent for public events organized in cooperation with the library. These public events are included in the library’s communications. All events held in the library’s facilities must comply with good practice and Finnish law. Individual political parties or religious organizations cannot reserve the facilities. The library charges rent by full hours after the first hour. The library does not provide free facilities for profit-making purposes.

The production and maintenance of maps of the City of Lappeenranta is entirely in numerical form in the geographic information system used by the city. Numerical map material is provided in the most common file formats for digital use and further processing. The city sells the map material and geospatial datasets it produces and maintains.

Map products include, for example, a base map, a detailed plan extract with regulations, a plot map and a plot subdivision map. Documents for a building permit can also be ordered in the same online service.

### General terms and conditions • The layout of the print can be modified, and it can be produced for the desired area on the selected scale. • Prints include, for example, guide maps, the public office the map, the base map, confirmed detailed plans, confirmed master plans and aerial photographs. • The price of a map print does not include a publication permission. • Special materials and unusual labour costs are added to the price of prints. • Colour and black and white prints are priced according to a different rate. • The delivery time for the documents is 7–14 weekdays. ### Vector and raster material • Vector material can be delivered to the customer, for example, as autocad image files (DWG) or DXF transfer files, as well as in MapInfo tab or MIF formats. The material to be submitted will be limited regionally or on the basis of the data content in accordance with the level breakdown. • The format and resolution of the raster images can be agreed upon separately. The material is delivered in the most common file formats used for storing map data (TIFF, PNG, JPG). ### Level and height systems of the material to be delivered • The city switched to using ETRS89-GK28 plane coordinate systems and N2000 elevation systems in 2012. • The difference between the current N2000 elevation system and the previous N60 elevation system is +0.21 m. • Users of the map data should pay attention to the coordinate systems of the map data during the transition period.

A national matriculation examination is organised as part of general upper secondary education. Completion of the matriculation examination can be divided into up to three consecutive examination periods. The matriculation examination is held twice a year, in spring and autumn. The matriculation examination consists of a minimum of five tests. One of them is the candidate’s mother tongue, and the other tests are chosen from among the second national language, foreign languages, mathematics and humanities and natural sciences. The matriculation examination provides general eligibility for Finnish higher education institutions and is also used as part of these institutions’ student selection. Students enrol for the matriculation examination in accordance with the guidelines of the upper secondary school. Students are informed about the enrolment through Wilma. Those who wish to retake tests or supplement the examination can get instructions from the secretaries of the upper secondary school.

Free for those included in compulsory education (completing its syllabus on and after 1 January 2021). Retaking tests and supplementing the examination after passing it is subject to a fee. Subject to a fee for those not included in compulsory education, those retaking tests and those supplementing the examination. The fee for checking a matriculation examination test by a private student is €47 per test. The fee is not charged for tests of the examination period immediately after graduation.

The City of Lappeenranta purchases the school catering services from Saimaan Tukipalvelut Oy. In day-care centres, children are also served breakfast and a snack in addition to lunch. In some schools, it is possible to buy snacks from Saimaan Tukipalvelut Oy. Upper secondary school students are entitled to free school meals on the days when their education takes place at school.

Morning and afternoon activities provided under the Basic Education Act are intended for pupils in grades 1–2 as well as for all pupils who have a decision on support. In Lappeenranta, we currently provide only afternoon activities. The aim of the afternoon activities is to offer the child a safe and positive environment after the school day. The activities support the child’s growth and development, encourage good leisure-time habits, and help prevent situations where a child would be left alone or without supervision. The activities are organized on weekdays during the school term, primarily between 11:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Activities are not provided during school holidays or on Christmas and spring celebration days. A participation fee is charged for attending the afternoon activities. Children are provided with a snack in the group, and treatment for any accidents is free of charge for the child. In Lappeenranta, afternoon activities are organized both as a municipal service and as subsidized services in cooperation with partners.

### Applying for Activities A place in afternoon activities is applied for electronically via Wilma (browser version) separately for each school year, in the spring of the preceding school year. Applications, cancellations, and changes to service needs are made in Wilma (browser version) under the Applications and Decisions tab by selecting Create a new application in the top right corner. Note for guardians of new pupils: The application must be submitted through the Wilma system of the child’s future school. Immediately after logging in, select the child’s future school to ensure the application is directed to the correct place. Decisions regarding admission to afternoon activities are made by the client fee secretary. ### Changes in Service Needs If there is a need to permanently change the number of days the child attends per month, the change must be made in Wilma (browser version). The change can take effect from the beginning of the following month. It is recommended to submit the change at least two weeks before the end of the current month. Changes are made in Wilma by selecting Change in Afternoon Activity Service Needs. The number of days can only be changed if the change lasts for at least three months. All changes are processed by the client fee secretary. ### Cancellation of a Place If the afternoon activity place granted to a child is no longer needed, it must be cancelled as soon as possible in Wilma (browser version). Changes occurring during the school year must also be reported by cancelling the place in Wilma. Simply not using the place is not sufficient, and the place will not be cancelled automatically in such cases. All cancellations are processed by the client fee secretary.

Places in afternoon activities are applied for on a yearly basis. Pupils receiving support must also submit an application. The application period for the 2026–2027 school year is open from April 1 to April 20, 2026. The application is submitted electronically through the Wilma system (browser version) as follows: School (new pupils) → Applications and Decisions → Create a new application → Applying for Afternoon Activities. If places remain available, children may still be admitted after the application period on a first-come, first-served basis. ### Applications for Steiner School and Itä-Suomen koulu Applications for the Steiner School afternoon activities are submitted by email to: lpr.steinerkoulu@lprsteinerkoulu.net Applications for the Itä-Suomen koulu afternoon activities are submitted through the school’s own Wilma system. ### Processing of Applications and Order of Priority According to the decision of the Committee for Children and Youth, all pupils receiving support who apply during the application period will be admitted to afternoon activities. If there are more applicants than available places after this, priority is given to: * First-grade pupils * Pupils with significant grounds, such as single parenthood, parents working evening shifts and challenges related to the child’s growth or development If places are still available, children may be admitted after the application period in order of registration. Applications are submitted through Wilma (browser version). ### Organization of Activities at Schools You can apply for afternoon activities at all primary schools. The city has agreements for organizing activities at most schools. A group will be established if there are at least 12 applicants. If the number of participants later drops below eight, the service provider may discontinue the activities from the beginning of the following month. ### Who Is the Activity Intended For? Daycare centres provide full-time and part-time early childhood education for children under school age. The children’s age and development are taken into account when forming groups of children. The daycare centres follow the early childhood education plan of Lappeenranta. In early childhood education, the child’s development and learning are supported in accordance with the child’s needs. It is important for the child that the support forms a coherent continuum during early childhood education and when the child moves on to pre-primary education. In addition to 13 municipal daycare centres, Lappeenranta has 7 private daycare centres from which the city purchases services. The daycare centres are usually open from 6.30 to 17.00 and, if necessary, from 6.00 to 17.30. We ask guardians for proof of shift work when applying for an early childhood education place. Round-the-clock care is provided at Kelttu Daycare Centre. Shift care is provided at Joutseno Daycare Centre and Sammontalo Daycare Centre as well as at Hovinpelto location of Lauritsala Daycare Centre. The daycare centres are located in four early childhood education areas. Apply for an early childhood education place by using the early childhood education online services of the City of Lappeenranta at least four months before your child needs an early childhood education place. If you need an early childhood education place due to sudden access to employment, studies or training, apply for an early childhood education place as soon as possible, but no later than two weeks before the need for an early childhood education place. Parents can apply for an early childhood education place for their child in municipal family daycare in addition to the daycare centres. Family daycare is early childhood education provided in the home of the provider or child. Family daycare is early childhood education in a private home. Family daycare can also be provided in the children’s own home. The activities can take place in one or more family homes, and one such group can include up to three families. This requires solid cooperation and flexibility of all parties involved. Meals are always provided by the family who lives in the home that is being used. The maximum number of children in a family daycare provider’s group is four children of different ages in full-time care and one pre-primary education or school pupil in part-time care, including the provider’s own children under school age. The family daycare provider prepares the meals for the children. An early childhood education plan is prepared for each child. The small group size in family daycare allows for the individual consideration of the children and close cooperation with the parents. Within the realms of possibility, family daycare providers work together in their area according to the needs of the groups of children. If necessary, each child is assigned a secondary early childhood education place, a daycare centre or another family daycare provider, which can be used when the family daycare provider is on holiday or otherwise unavailable. The early childhood education plan of Lappeenranta is followed in family daycare. In early childhood education, the child’s development and learning are supported in accordance with the child’s needs. It is important for the child that the support forms a coherent continuum during early childhood education and when the child moves on to pre-primary education.

Apply for an early childhood education place by using the early childhood education online services of the City of Lappeenranta at least four months before your child needs an early childhood education place. If you need an early childhood education place due to sudden access to employment, studies or training, apply for an early childhood education place as soon as possible, but no later than two weeks before the need for an early childhood education place. Submit a separate application for each child in need of an early childhood education place. If you wish, a notification of successful submittal of an application can be sent to your email address. The Museums of Lappeenranta aim to bring joy, knowledge and experiences to visitors and promote our regional identity through history and art. The Museums of Lappeenranta destinations include the South Karelia Museum, Lappeenranta Art Museum, Wolkoff House Museum and Cavalry Museum. The South Karelia Museum is a museum with regional responsibility. It records, preserves, documents and exhibits the material and intellectual heritage of South Karelia and the ceded Viipuri and Karelian Isthmus. The museum’s permanent exhibition presents the history of our region from prehistoric times to the modern day with artefacts, photographs, audio recordings, films and written documents. Tasked with regional responsibility, the museum directs and advises the activities of local museums in the area. Expert and official services related to the cultural environment are provided for land use, planning and renovation advice purposes. The Wolkoff House Museum presents the history of a Russian merchant family in Lappeenranta from the 1840s to the 1990s in an authentic environment in the Lappeenranta city centre. The Wolkoff House Museum is only available for guided tours. The Cavalry Museum presents the history of Finnish cavalry from the 17th century Hakkapeliittas to the modern tradition in an old 18th-century guardhouse in the Lappeenranta Fortress. The Lappeenranta Art Museum is the regional museum of visual arts in South-Eastern Finland, advising South Karelia and Kymenlaakso municipalities and towns, local museums, communities and individuals in matters related to visual arts and cultural heritage. The museum presents and collects Finnish visual art. The collections and research also cover the art heritage of the ceded Viipuri and Karelian Isthmus.
